Therapy

Therapy for Older Adults

Retirement, health changes, caring for a spouse and losing friends can all arrive in the same few years. Therapy offers a steady place to talk it through.

Later life brings its own challenges

Many older adults grew up believing you keep your troubles to yourself. Yet the later decades can bring more change than any other stage: leaving a career, moving homes, illness, the death of a spouse or friends, and new questions about meaning. Talking with someone trained to help is a sign of good sense, not weakness.

Common reasons older adults come in

  • Grief after the death of a spouse, sibling or friend
  • Adjusting to retirement and a less structured day
  • Worry about health, memory or independence
  • Low mood that is easy to mistake for normal aging
  • Strain of caring for a partner with an illness
  • Changes in relationships with adult children

Depression is not a normal part of aging

Fatigue, poor sleep, aches and pulling away from people can all be signs of depression in later life. It responds to treatment at any age, and noticing it early makes a real difference to quality of life.

Memory concerns

If you or your family have noticed forgetfulness that worries you, our testing team offers memory and dementia evaluations. A clear answer, whatever it is, helps you plan, and therapy can help with the feelings that come with it.

Questions

I have never done this before. What is it like?

It is a private conversation. You set the pace and decide what to talk about.

Is telehealth hard to use?

Most people manage with a phone or tablet, and a family member can help set it up the first time.

Do other clinicians take Medicare?

At this time Dr. Renata Nero is the clinician who accepts Medicare. Others see older adults with other plans or private pay.
