Hypnosis

Hypnosis Alongside Medical Care

For people living with a complicated health issue, hypnosis can be one more tool for stress, sleep and discomfort, used together with the care your doctors provide.

Who this is for

Living with a chronic condition or going through demanding treatment takes a toll beyond the illness itself: poor sleep, worry before appointments, tension and discomfort. Hypnosis gives some people a way to settle the body and mind during that time.

What sessions can work on

  • Relaxation before procedures and appointments
  • Sleep
  • Stress and worry about health
  • Coping with discomfort
  • Habits that affect health, such as smoking

How we work

  1. 1.

    Your medical picture

We ask about your diagnosis and treatment, and work within your doctors' plan.

  2. 2.

    Sessions

Guided hypnosis focused on what you most want help with.

  3. 3.

    Self-hypnosis

Short techniques you can use at home or in a waiting room.

  4. 4.

    Coordination

With your permission, we can share what you are doing with your care team.

Kumar's background

Dr. Kumar Venkatachalam was trained and licensed as a physician in India and completed a residency in Psychological Medicine before turning to hypnosis. He practices here as a hypnosis practitioner and is not a U.S. licensed physician.

An important note

Hypnosis is not psychotherapy or medical treatment and does not replace care from your physician or therapist. Our hypnosis practitioner is not a U.S. licensed physician or licensed therapist.

Hypnosis does not cure or treat disease. Keep following your doctors' advice and do not change any medical treatment because of hypnosis.

Questions to bring to your doctor

Tell your physician you are considering hypnosis. Ask whether there are any reasons it would not be a good fit for you right now, and whether there are specific symptoms, such as sleep or procedure anxiety, where it might help most.

Practicing at home

The techniques you learn in session are short on purpose. A few minutes of self-hypnosis before bed, in a waiting room, or during an infusion can be easier to reach for than a long routine.
