Therapy
Therapy for Young Adults and College Students
Your late teens and twenties bring big freedoms and big pressures at once. Therapy is a place to sort out school, work, relationships and who you want to be.
A stage nobody hands you a map for
Moving out, starting college, choosing a major, landing a first job, ending a first serious relationship: these years ask you to make lasting decisions with very little experience. It is common to feel behind everyone else, even when you are doing fine.
What young adults often bring
- Homesickness or loneliness after moving away
- Pressure about grades, majors and careers
- Anxiety and depression that started in high school and followed you
- Drinking, gaming or scrolling that has started to cost you
- Breakups and figuring out what you want in a partner
- Tension with parents as you become more independent
Therapy that fits a student schedule
College students in Texas can see any of our therapists by video from a dorm or apartment, as long as they are in Texas at the time of the session. Evening and weekend appointments make it easier to work around classes and shifts.
How we usually start
- 1.
Pick one or two goals
Sleep, motivation, a relationship, a decision you are stuck on.
- 2.
Look at patterns
What helps, what makes things worse, and why.
- 3.
Try something new
Small experiments between sessions, then review what happened.
- 4.
Build independence
Skills you can keep using long after therapy ends.

If you are a parent
You can help an adult child find a therapist, and you can pay for sessions, but the young adult is the client. Privacy laws mean the therapist talks with them, not you, unless they give written permission.
When something else may be going on
Some students discover in college that ADHD, a learning difference or anxiety has been making school harder all along. Our testing team offers evaluations that can support requests for accommodations.

Do I need my parents' permission?
Not if you are 18 or older.
