ADHD Testing for Adults

If you have spent years compensating for missed deadlines, unfinished projects and a mind that will not settle, an adult ADHD evaluation can tell you whether ADHD is the reason.

Why adults seek an evaluation now

Many adults were never evaluated as children. Some did well in school because the structure carried them, then struggled once work, a household and a family arrived with no one else setting the schedule. Others were labeled careless, lazy or disorganized and came to believe it.

Often the question comes up after a child is diagnosed and a parent recognizes their own history in the description. An evaluation gives you an answer based on testing and history, rather than on an online quiz.

What adults often describe

  • Starting many projects and finishing few
  • Losing track of time, bills and appointments
  • Rereading the same page several times
  • Restlessness in long meetings or conversations
  • Putting off tasks until the last possible moment
  • Feeling that ordinary chores take far more effort than they should

ADHD or something that looks like it

Poor sleep, anxiety, depression, thyroid problems, long-term stress and some medications can all affect focus. A careful adult evaluation looks at those possibilities too, so you do not walk away with a label that does not fit.

How an adult evaluation works

  1. 1.

    Interview

Your evaluator asks about childhood, school, work, relationships, health and what you want to understand.

  2. 2.

    History from others

When possible, a partner, parent or old report cards help show how long symptoms have been present.

  3. 3.

    Testing

Standardized measures of attention, memory, processing speed and related skills, plus questionnaires.

  4. 4.

    Feedback and report

You hear the results in plain language and receive a written report with recommendations.

Adult ADHD testing questions

Can I be diagnosed with ADHD for the first time as an adult?

Yes. ADHD begins in childhood, but many adults are first evaluated in their twenties, forties or later. Part of the interview looks back at how things went when you were young.

Will my report work for my employer or a licensing exam?

The report describes your results and recommendations, and you decide who sees it. Whether an employer or testing board grants a request is their decision.

Is testing covered by insurance?

No. Our psychological testing is private pay. Call 832-876-3232 for pricing.
