Counseling for Substance Use and Compulsive Habits

Help with drinking, drugs, gambling, gaming, scrolling and other habits that have started to cost more than they give.

When a habit takes over

It usually starts as a way to relax, cope or connect. Over time it takes more time, money or energy, and stopping becomes harder than expected. Whether it is alcohol, drugs, gaming, gambling, pornography, shopping or your phone, the pattern is similar, and so is the way out.

What we work on

  • Alcohol and drug use
  • Co-occurring anxiety, depression or trauma
  • Gaming, gambling and online habits
  • Compulsive eating and spending
  • Relapse prevention
  • Repairing relationships and trust

How counseling works

  1. 1.

    Where you are

Motivational interviewing helps you sort out what you want, without lectures.

  2. 2.

    Triggers

Identify the situations, feelings and people tied to the habit.

  3. 3.

    Skills

Manage urges, cravings and stress in new ways.

  4. 4.

    Support

Build routines and relationships that support change.

The Kicking Compulsive Habits group

Torresy Smith leads a therapist-led group for adults on Wednesday evenings in Sugar Land. It covers social media, gaming, gambling, pornography, eating, spending and substance use.

Medication support

For some substance use concerns, medication helps. Dr. Richard P. Diaz has managed medications in addiction medicine settings and can see you by telehealth.

Questions

Do I have to quit completely to start?

No. Many people start therapy unsure what they want. That is a fine place to begin.

Is this confidential?

Yes, within the limits explained at your first session.

Your first session

Your counselor will ask about what you use or do, how often, what it gives you and what it costs. You will not be judged for what you share. Together you will decide on a first goal, whether that is cutting back, stopping, or simply understanding the pattern better.

Families and loved ones

Loved ones are affected too. Family sessions, with your permission, can rebuild trust and help everyone support change without enabling it.
