Hypnosis

What to Expect From a Hypnosis Session

Hypnosis is often misunderstood. Here is what it is, what it is not, and what actually happens during a first visit with our hypnosis practitioner.

What hypnosis is

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and deep relaxation. In that state, people tend to be more open to suggestions they have agreed to in advance, such as staying calm in a situation that usually causes stress or responding differently to a craving.

It is not sleep, and it is not mind control. You hear everything, remember the session, and can stop at any time.

Common myths

None of these are true.

  • You will be made to do something against your will
  • You will not remember anything
  • Only weak-minded people can be hypnotized
  • Hypnosis works instantly, after one session
  • Hypnosis can replace medical treatment

A first visit, step by step

  1. 1.

    Talk first

You discuss what you want to work on, your health and any concerns.

  2. 2.

    Settle in

You sit comfortably while Kumar guides you into relaxation with his voice.

  3. 3.

    Focused work

Suggestions and imagery related to your goal, agreed with you beforehand.

  4. 4.

    Return and review

You come back to full alertness and talk about how it felt.

  5. 5.

    Home practice

Many people leave with a self-hypnosis technique to practice.

Questions

Can everyone be hypnotized?

Most people can experience some degree of hypnosis, though it varies from person to person.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the goal. Kumar will talk with you about a reasonable plan after the first visit.

Should I tell my doctor?

Yes. Let your physician know you are using hypnosis, especially if you are being treated for a medical condition.

How to get the most from a session

Come with a clear goal, wear comfortable clothing and avoid heavy caffeine beforehand. Tell Kumar about any medical conditions and medications. Practicing the techniques at home between visits matters more than any single session in the office.
