Hypnosis for Habit Change

Hypnosis can help some adults work on stubborn habits such as nail biting, skin picking or mindless snacking, as one part of a plan for change.

Why habits are hard to change

Many habits run on autopilot. They show up when you are bored, tired, stressed or concentrating on something else, which is exactly when willpower is lowest. Knowing a habit is unhelpful rarely stops it.

Hypnosis uses focused relaxation and suggestion to help you notice the moments that trigger a habit and rehearse a different response.

Habits adults ask about

  • Nail biting
  • Skin or cuticle picking
  • Snacking out of boredom or stress
  • Teeth clenching related to tension
  • Procrastination routines
  • Other repeated behaviors you want to change

How sessions usually work

  1. 1.

    Conversation

Kumar asks about the habit, when it happens and what you have already tried.

  2. 2.

    Relaxation

You are guided into a calm, focused state. You remain aware and in control.

  3. 3.

    Suggestion and rehearsal

You practice new responses to the situations that set off the habit.

  4. 4.

    Self-hypnosis

You learn techniques to use at home between sessions.

Is hypnosis the right tool?

Some repetitive behaviors are part of conditions such as OCD, anxiety or a substance use problem, which are better treated with therapy. If that seems possible, we can help you connect with one of our therapists instead of, or along with, hypnosis.

Questions

Will hypnosis make me stop right away?

Results vary, and no specific result is promised. Most people use hypnosis as one support while they practice new routines.

Will I lose control?

No. You stay aware during hypnosis and can stop at any time.

What if my habit is causing injury?

See your doctor for any skin damage or physical symptoms, and consider therapy as well.

Making change stick

Habits rarely disappear because of one session. The people who do best usually pair hypnosis with practical steps: noticing the first sign of the urge, keeping hands busy, changing the setting where the habit happens and practicing self-hypnosis daily. Kumar will talk with you about which steps fit your situation.
