When to Try Couples Counseling

Most couples wait years longer than they need to. Counseling is easier and often shorter when you start while you still like each other most days.

The short answer

Try couples counseling when the same argument keeps coming back, when you feel more like roommates than partners, after a breach of trust, before or after a big change such as a baby or a move, or when one of you is quietly wondering whether to stay. You do not need to be in crisis. Many couples come in to keep a good relationship strong.

Signs it may be time

  • Small disagreements turn into big fights
  • You avoid certain topics to keep the peace
  • Affection or intimacy has faded
  • One of you shuts down while the other pushes harder
  • You are parenting as opponents rather than a team
  • Trust has been broken

Why earlier is easier

Over time, couples build up resentment and settle into patterns that are harder to change. When you start sooner, there is more goodwill to work with, and sessions can focus on skills and repair rather than damage control.

If your partner will not come

Start on your own. Changing your side of a pattern often changes the relationship, and some partners join later once they see it is not about blame.

What sessions often involve

  1. 1.

    Understanding the cycle

Mapping what happens in your arguments and why.

  2. 2.

    New ways to talk

Practicing how to raise concerns without escalating.

  3. 3.

    Repair

Learning to recover after a fight.

  4. 4.

    Real-life practice

Trying changes at home between sessions.

When safety comes first

Couples counseling is not the right first step if there is violence or fear in the relationship. If you are in danger, call 911. If you are in crisis, call or text 988. An individual therapist can help you plan next steps safely.

What to expect in the first session

Your therapist will want to hear from each of you about what brought you in, what is working, and where things get stuck. You do not need to agree on the problem before you arrive. Part of the work is understanding how each of you sees it, without anyone being cast as the villain.
