Using Out-of-Network Benefits and Superbills

If your clinician is not in network with your plan, you may still get part of your session fee back. Here is how out-of-network benefits and superbills work.

What out-of-network means

Every clinician here accepts a different set of plans, and some see clients as private pay only. When your clinician is not in network with your plan, you pay for the session and your insurance may reimburse part of it, depending on your out-of-network benefits.

Your benefits may be better than you think

Out-of-network benefits may be comparable to in-network benefits, or you may have to meet a deductible first. Whether your clinician is in network or out of network with your plan, we are happy to file claims for you on request.

What a superbill is

A superbill is a detailed receipt with the information an insurer needs to process a claim: the clinician's credentials and identifiers, the date and type of service, the diagnosis code and the amount paid. You can submit it to your insurer yourself if you prefer to file on your own.

Questions to ask your insurer

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health?
  • What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much has been met?
  • What percentage of the allowed amount do you reimburse?
  • How do I submit a claim or a superbill, and how long does reimbursement take?
  • Are telehealth sessions covered out of network?
