Does Insurance Cover ADHD Testing?

It depends on the plan and on the practice. Here is the straight answer for Sugar Land Counseling Center, and how to plan for an evaluation either way.

The short answer

At Sugar Land Counseling Center, psychological testing, including ADHD testing, is private pay. We do not bill insurance for evaluations. Insurance coverage for testing varies widely from plan to plan in general, and some plans limit what they will pay for or require prior approval. If you want to know whether your plan reimburses any part of an evaluation, ask your insurer directly.

Questions to ask your insurance company

  • Does my plan cover psychological or neuropsychological testing?
  • Is prior authorization required?
  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for testing?
  • What documentation would you need to consider reimbursement?
  • Is there a limit on testing hours or a deductible to meet first?

Why some families choose private pay anyway

Private pay evaluations can often be scheduled sooner, and the evaluation is shaped by the questions you need answered rather than by what a plan will approve. Many families tell us the speed matters most, especially when a child is struggling now or a school deadline is coming.

What the evaluation includes

An ADHD evaluation here includes an interview about history and current concerns, one or two longer testing appointments in person in Sugar Land, a feedback session that explains the results, and a written report with recommendations you can share with schools, doctors and therapists.

Planning ahead

  1. 1.

    Call for pricing

Ask about the cost for the evaluation you need.

  2. 2.

    Note the cancellation window

Testing requires 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule.

  3. 3.

    Check reimbursement

If your plan has out-of-network benefits, ask what they need.

  4. 4.

    Book

Evaluations are often scheduled within a week.

If you need therapy too

Therapy is different. Many of our therapists are in network with plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, and each profile lists what that clinician accepts.

Using the report later

A written report is yours to keep. Families share it with teachers when asking for classroom supports, with pediatricians and prescribers, and with therapists who are building a plan. Adults use it with employers, colleges and licensing boards when requesting accommodations. A thorough report often keeps paying off for years after the evaluation.
