How to Use Your Insurance for Therapy

A few calls before your first session can save you a surprise bill. Here is what to ask your insurer, what to do in our client portal, and what happens if a clinician is out of network.

The short answer

Find a clinician who is in network with your plan, call your insurer to confirm your mental health benefits and copay, and enter your insurance in our client portal by 7 am on the day of your first session. If the insurance section is not complete by then, we will not know you plan to use insurance and you will be billed the full session fee.

Plans our clinicians accept

Coverage depends on the clinician. Each profile lists exactly which plans that person accepts.

  • Aetna
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Cigna
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Optum
  • Medicare, with Dr. Renata Nero
  • Oscar
  • UMR

Questions to ask your insurer

  • Is outpatient mental health covered, and what is my copay or coinsurance?
  • Do I have a deductible to meet first?
  • Is telehealth covered the same way as in-person visits?
  • Do I need a referral or prior authorization?
  • Do I have out-of-network benefits?

If your clinician is out of network

We are happy to file claims for you on request, whether your clinician is in network or not. If your plan has out-of-network benefits, they may be comparable to in-network benefits, or you may be reimbursed for part of the fee. Ask about superbills if you prefer to submit claims yourself.

What insurance does not cover here

Psychological testing is private pay. Hypnosis is private pay. Medication management is private pay.

If you are not sure what your plan covers

Call the member services number on the back of your card and ask specifically about outpatient behavioral health. Write down the name of the person you spoke with, the date and what they told you. If something on a later statement does not match, those notes make it much easier to sort out.
