Psychological Testing

Gifted and Talented Testing

IQ testing for gifted program applications, and for bright children whose grades or behavior do not match what they are capable of.

Two reasons families ask

Some families need a cognitive or IQ score as part of an application to a gifted program or a private school. Others have a child who seems very capable at home yet is bored, frustrated or falling behind in class, and they want to understand why.

Both are good reasons to test, and the second often leads to the more useful findings.

What testing can show

  • Overall reasoning ability
  • Strengths in verbal, visual and nonverbal thinking
  • Working memory and processing speed
  • Uneven profiles, where some skills are far ahead of others
  • Learning differences or attention concerns that can hide high ability

When a bright child struggles

Some children are both gifted and have a learning difference, ADHD or anxiety. Their strengths cover the difficulty just enough that no one looks closer, and their struggles keep their strengths from showing. A broader evaluation can identify both.

Questions

Will a private IQ score be accepted by my child's program?

Each school and district sets its own rules for which tests and evaluators it accepts. Check the program's requirements before you book, and tell us what they are.

How should my child prepare?

Sleep, breakfast and a relaxed morning help most. There is nothing to study.

Is it covered by insurance?

No. Testing is private pay. Call 832-876-3232 for pricing.

Making sense of the scores

A single overall number rarely tells the whole story. Two children with the same score can have very different profiles, one with exceptional verbal reasoning and average processing speed, another the reverse. During feedback we walk through each part of the profile, what it means for how your child learns best, and what to look for if they start to struggle or lose interest in school.
