ADHD Testing for Children

When a teacher, coach or pediatrician mentions ADHD, an evaluation gives you a clear answer and a plan for school and home, instead of months of guessing.

When parents usually call

The first sign is often a note home: unfinished work, trouble staying seated, calling out, or a child who seems bright but cannot show it on paper. At home it may look like homework battles that last all evening, forgotten assignments and a child who is told to try harder every day.

Some children with ADHD are not hyperactive at all. They are quiet daydreamers who drift off in class and are easy to overlook.

What we look at

  • Attention and how long your child can stay with a task
  • Impulse control and activity level
  • Working memory and processing speed
  • Reading, writing and math skills that can mask or mimic ADHD
  • Anxiety, mood and sleep
  • How your child does at home, at school and with friends

How a child evaluation works

  1. 1.

    Parent interview

We start with you: pregnancy and development, school history, health and what you are seeing now.

  2. 2.

    Teacher and parent forms

Rating scales from home and school show whether symptoms appear in more than one setting.

  3. 3.

    Time with your child

Standardized tasks with built-in breaks, paced for your child's age.

  4. 4.

    Feedback

We meet with you to explain the results and answer questions.

  5. 5.

    Written report

Recommendations for school, home and next steps that you can share with teachers and your pediatrician.

Preparing your child

Tell your child they will spend time doing puzzles, answering questions and working on school-style tasks with someone whose job is to learn how their brain works best. A good night's sleep, a normal breakfast and any glasses or hearing aids they use are the most helpful things to bring.

Questions from parents

Can the school use the report?

You can share it with the school. Many families use the recommendations when asking about a 504 plan or other supports; the school makes its own decisions.

Will my child be put on medication?

An evaluation does not commit you to anything. If ADHD is confirmed, the report lays out options such as counseling, school supports and parent strategies.

Why input from school matters

ADHD shows up in more than one setting. Rating forms from a teacher, and copies of report cards or school testing, help show whether what you see at home also happens in class. If your child sees a tutor, coach or speech therapist, their observations are welcome too.
