Autism Testing for Houston Families
Autism evaluations at Sugar Land Counseling Center serve families throughout the Houston area, for children, teens and adults, without a months-long wait.
When you are waiting for an answer
Parents often describe the time between noticing something and getting an evaluation as the hardest part. A pediatrician says to wait and see, a school suggests testing, and the first available appointment is far away. Our evaluators work to shorten that gap for families across Houston.
What may lead a family to call
- Speech that came late, or language that sounds different
- Difficulty with back-and-forth play or conversation
- Strong routines and distress when they change
- Sensory sensitivities to sound, texture or light
- A teen or adult who has always felt out of step socially
How an autism evaluation works here
- 1.
Parent or self interview
Developmental history and daily life.
- 2.
Observation
Structured activities with the child, teen or adult.
- 3.
Testing
Language, thinking and related emotional or attention concerns.
- 4.
Feedback
A meeting to explain results and next steps, plus a written report.

After the evaluation
A diagnosis opens doors to school services, therapy and support. Our child therapists work on big emotions, social skills and life skills, and our team offers consulting for parents who are new to a diagnosis.

Autism testing questions
How young can my child be?
Call us to talk through your child's age and needs. We evaluate children, teens and adults.
Will my child be stressed?
Evaluators explain each task, build in breaks and keep the pace comfortable.
Can you also test for ADHD?
When attention concerns are part of the picture, the evaluation can look at those too.
Is testing covered by insurance?
No. Psychological testing here is private pay. Call 832-876-3232 for pricing.
Teens and adults are evaluated too
Autism is not only diagnosed in young children. Many teens, especially girls, and many adults learned to mask their differences for years, copying others to fit in and paying for it with exhaustion and anxiety. An evaluation at any age can make sense of a long history of feeling different.
For adults, the interview focuses on your own history and present life, and a family member's perspective can help if you are comfortable including one.
