HARMONIZING THANKSGIVING: HOW TO CREATE FAMILY COHESION AND AVOID DRAMA

by Kiran Mishra, Ph.D.

Uncle Bill and cousin Kirk who love to bring up controversial issues and stir things up are coming to Thanksgiving! Here are some tips on how to keep the peace in the family, create cohesion, and enjoy your Thanksgiving.

1. Plan Engaging Activities: Organize activities that encourage participation and bonding, like board games, outdoor games, or collaborative cooking. Shared activities can divert attention away from potential conflicts.

2. Foster Open Communication: Encourage open, respectful communication. Create an environment where everyone feels heard and valued. If things start to get awry, establish ground rules.

3. Focus on Common Interests: Find common interests or topics that bring people together. This could be shared hobbies, favorite memories, or discussing positive, non-controversial subjects.

4. Assign Responsibilities: Distribute tasks or responsibilities among family members. Involving everyone in meal preparation or setting up activities can foster a sense of teamwork and reduce tensions.

5. Create a Neutral Environment: Host the gathering in a neutral, comfortable space to avoid associations with past conflicts. This can help set a fresh and positive tone for interactions.

6. Redirect Conversations: If discussions head towards sensitive topics, gently redirect conversations to more neutral or enjoyable subjects to prevent potential conflicts.

7. Practice Patience and Empathy: Encourage patience and empathy among family members. Understanding differing perspectives can prevent misunderstandings and diffuse tense situations.

8. Lead by Example: As a host or influential family member, lead by example. Show appreciation, diffuse tension with humor, and demonstrate respectful communication.

9. Have Contingency Plans: Be prepared to pivot if things start to get tense. Have backup plans for activities or ways to subtly diffuse any potential conflicts.

10. Focus on Gratitude: Reinforce the spirit of Thanksgiving by emphasizing gratitude and appreciation for each other. Encourage everyone to share what they are thankful for, fostering a positive atmosphere.

By implementing these strategies you can create an environment that prioritizes enjoyment, connection, and positive interaction, and minimize the likelihood of family drama during Thanksgiving gatherings.
