Weight Loss and Bariatric Pre-Surgical Psychological Evaluations
At Sugar Land Counseling, Dr. Mishra will help you to achieve your weight loss goals. She will help you behaviorally by helping you change your lifestyle to achieve and maintain weight loss or fitness goals. Additionally, she conducts pre-surgical bariatric psychological assessments for those who will be undergoing weight loss surgery. Many insurance companies and surgeons require pre-surgical weight loss psychological evaluations, and Dr. Mishra is happy to be your ally in this part of the process.
The pre-surgical bariatric psychological evaluation typically consists of an interview and psychological testing. Generally, Dr. Mishra will gain information about your health, eating habits, pyschological and social functioning/history, expectations following surgery, and how you might cope with challenges that may arise post-surgery.
This assessment does not result in a passing or failing score. The purpose is to assess your current adjustment and capacity to cope with the demands of surgery and the lifestyle changes that will follow surgery. Suggestions may be made based upon the information gathered from you. Examples of recommendations may include treatment or services prior to proceeding with the surgery, or attendance of support groups.
Issues such as depression, binge eating, or anxiety are common, and in most cases are not a reason to deny or delay surgery. Those who are typically not good candidates for bariatric surgery include pregnant women, alcoholics and drug addicts, and those with very severe and poorly controlled psychological disorders (again, psychological disorders typically do not disqualify people from obtaining weight loss surgery).
At Sugar Land Counseling, Dr. Mishra knows that this is just one of many things that are required of you prior to your surgery. Therefore, Dr. Mishra makes every effort to speed this along. Your assessment will most likely be conducted within a few days of your call, and your written report will generally be ready for your doctor within 3-4 days of your assessment.
Dr. Mishra and staff at Sugar Land Counseling are here to help you achieve your weight loss and health goals throughout your weight loss process. Not only is Dr. Mishra available to do the pre-surgical bariatric psychological assessment, she is also available post-surgery for individual therapy or for behavioral support. Weight loss surgery and its results are life-changing. The adjustment to the many changes that occur post-surgery with your self-image, relationships, etc., can be stressful. Some people revert to old habits, which can contribute to weight gain. Others may substitute over-eating with another maladaptive behavior. Dr. Mishra and Sugar Land Counseling staff are available to help you through this process.
